2010 Pusan International Film Festival
Movie buffs all across the country are on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the 2010 Pusan International Film Festival, set to run from Oct. 7th to Oct. 15th at theaters around Haeundae Beach, Haeundae PIFF Village, Haeundae Centum City and Nampo-dong PIFF Plaza in Busan. Marking its 15th anniversary, this major movie event will feature a number of newly released Korean films, as well as unsung masterpieces from all over Asia.

Along with the ‘Korea Cinema Retrospective,’ and four ‘Special Programs in Focus,’ the 2010 PIFF will launch a brand new series titled ‘Cinema Talk Beyond Cinema’ with lectures by world-renowned directors and critics. This year’s film festival will feature 307 movies from 67 countries as well as over a hundred special international premieres. During the festival period, charity events and donations will be held by ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Good Neighbors’ adding another unique element to this already special event!

*International films will be presented with original soundtrack and Korean subtitles.
*Special seating is available for guests in wheelchairs.

Opening/Closing

Opening film: ‘Under the Hawthorn Tree’
In ‘Under the Hawthorne Tree,’ director Zhang Yimou (‘Lovers,’ ‘Hero,’ and ‘Curse of the Golden Flower’) returns back to the simple style of his early years. The movie, adapted from Ai Mi’s novel ‘The Love of the Hawthorn Tree,’ is a story of star-crossed lovers set during China’s Cultural Revolution.

Closing film: ‘Camellia’
An omnibus movie by three Asian directors: Jang Jun-Hwan (Korea), Yukisada Isao (Japan), and Wisit Sasanatieng (Thailand).

Special Programs in Focus
Kurdish Cinema: The Unconquered Spirit
This year, ‘Special Asian Programs in Focus’ presents eight films of Kurdistan, a geo-cultural region in the Middle East. The Kurds populate a large area spanning several countries and have fought for centuries for autonomy and religious freedom. While vividly depicting the painful and frustrating reality of the people, the films have a strong theme of hope and depict the indomitable spirit of the Kurdish people.

Subversive Imagination: Spanish Masterpiece from Franco Regime
Commemorating the 60th anniversary of Korea-Spain diplomatic relations, ‘Special Spain Programs in Focus’ presents films of the Franco Regime that explore the theme of ‘the origin of imagination.’ Most of the seven featured films were banned or heavily censored during the reign of Francisco Franco, but today are considered some of the greatest works in Spanish film history.

Czech Films Now: Cinema of Liberalism
Commemorating the 20th anniversary of international relations between Korea and the Czech Republic, ‘Special Czech Programs in Focus’ showcases time-honored films from Eastern Europe. Modern films set during different historical backgrounds bring audiences into the world of the Czech Republic both past and present and highlight the undergoing ideological shift toward liberalism after the fall of communism.

④ A Tribute to Kwak Ji-kyun: Portrait of Melodrama
The session is a tribute to the late Kwak Ji-kyun, a representative Korean director who passed away in May of this year. Spotlighting Kwak’s blockbuster films of the 1980s, audiences are invited to explore the bittersweet love and confusion of youth and absorb themselves in the beauty and pain of lovers’ quarrels.

● Special Events
Special events include the "Master Class" (showcasing film maestros' lives and works), "Hand Printing Ceremony," (a lecture), "Cinema Talk Beyond Cinema," (with those in the movie business) and the "PIFF Academy" (a range of in-depth seminars and conferences on cinema). In addition, 10 other PIFF events including "Open Concert" and "Passion - Kim Dong Ho and Friends Photo Exhibition" will be held during the festival period.
